"Amaterasu"
A traditional Japanese tattoo of Amaterasu
My love for Japanese culture is no secret.
Since the first time I read the Kojiki, I felt compelled to design my own version of Amaterasu because of everything she represented.
I also felt compelled to express the misconceptions about women through my art.
So, in this case, when a client wanted a tattoo of a Japanese woman, I saw an opportunity to blend both concepts into one piece.
During the design process, I looked for a Kiyoe (woodblock print) of a Geisha, who are widely mistaken in the Western world for prostitutes.
Then I added some of Amaterasu's signature elements, such as her necklace and sun crown.
This piece is about 9 by 4 inches. Projects of this size generally start at $1,000.
